The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a new lead-based program that requires lead-safe training and certification of contractors who renovate, repair, or paint in certain housing structures. The program applies to pre-1978 construction. It pertains to contractors who disturb 20 square feet or MORE of painted surfaces for exterior walls or building OR more than 6 square feet of painted surfaces per room.
If the rule applies, contractors must receive Lead-Safe Work Practices training from an EPA-accredited trainer before performing work on a pre-1978 home. The contracting firm must also be certified by EPA.
